From a product photo to a listing file
Open the tool and leave Subject selected for a product photograph. Edge color is for a flat color that touches the border, not for a product sitting on a studio sweep with shadows.
- Upload the original. The first Subject run downloads the model. Wait for that download to finish. The time varies by device.
- Check the checkerboard preview, then white and black. A white listing background hides pale fringes, so look at black as well.
- Keep a transparent PNG as the master. For a marketplace file, select white and download JPEG or flat PNG. Confirm the pixel size of that download. This site does not certify that the file meets a marketplace rule.
Glass, reflections, and a product that is a similar color to the background can fail. Retake those shots with more contrast. Official channel rules belong to the marketplace, not to this tool.

Lighting and framing that survive background removal
Background removal cannot invent missing detail. If the product edge is soft because of motion blur, or if a shadow swallows half the silhouette, the mask will look soft too. Shoot with a locked shutter speed, diffuse light from both sides, and enough depth of field that the entire product is sharp. A cheap softbox or a north-facing window plus a white foam board reflector is enough for most catalog work.
Frame with a little breathing room, but not so much empty space that the product becomes a tiny island. After cutout, you will scale the subject to marketplace crop rules; starting with a well-composed original makes that scaling less destructive.
Inspect the catalog before uploading
Compare each downloaded cutout with its original at 100% zoom. Check logos, handles, gaps and soft edges on black and white. Also inspect thumbnails at the size customers will see. Keep a list of failed files; retry with a sharper source or correct the mask manually rather than publishing missing product details. The fruit example above is not a catalog quality benchmark.
For batch background removal, select up to eight files. The browser processes them one at a time and offers a ZIP of completed PNGs. Review each output and retry failed items; this is a browser batch, not an unattended server queue.
Prepare each destination’s version
Keep a transparent master and check the current category requirements of each marketplace. Etsy does not support transparent PNGs; transparent areas may appear black. Export a flat PNG or JPEG. Etsy also requires an unedited photograph of the actual item against a real background, with exceptions for some item types. A cutout does not replace that original. See Etsy’s image requirements (checked October 25, 2026).
When to keep a soft shadow
Some brands want a natural contact shadow so products do not look like stickers. Background removal usually kills the floor shadow. You can add a soft synthetic shadow in your design tool after cutout, or shoot on white and only clean the edges instead of full removal. Decide the look in a brand guide so freelancers do not invent a new shadow style every week.
